Greetings and welcome!

Hi, I’m Kate Aneth—author of soaring high fantasy. Thanks for stopping by. Until I release my debut novels, this site will be pretty bare bones.

What can you expect from my books? Character-driven high/epic fantasy, tonally less idealistic that Tolkien but more hopeful than Martin. So,  somewhere around Hobb, Britain, Sanderson in tone.

First up is a prequel novelette that will be part of an anthology of shorter stories—links in the chain leading to the events of the main story of the Ride the Wild Sky Saga:

About “Hope Awakened”

Harried by raiders, the farming villages of the Frostborn River lands have retreated deeper into the unforgiving mountains, trying desperately to preserve their peaceful way of life. Still grieving the loss of her husband to a warrior’s ax, Brene fears her kin have little room left to run. But a chance encounter with a dragon awakens in her a power to unite the bands. Can she convince them to make a stand or will they flee into their own ruin?

About Kate

Author. Dreamer. Photoshop addict. Cow girl (but not cowgirl).

Spoiler of pets. Unapologetic nerd.

Honesty time. Kate Aneth is a pen name. My real name is Suzie O’Connell and under that, I am a USA Today bestselling author of 13 heartfelt contemporary small town romance novels. But fantasy is and has always been my first love. And I’m finally getting back to it… because the real world doesn’t have dragons.

The name is from one of the first fantasy stories I ever wrote, way back in fourth or fifth grade. Kate was my main character and, in the tradition of all young writers, based largely on myself. Aneth was her bonded dragon (black, in case you’re wondering). Kate is also the name I would’ve chosen for myself and once contemplated making my legal name.

When I’m not writing, reading, or designing covers (both for myself and for other authors), I’m likely to be found spoiling my menagerie of animals (that, yes, includes two “pasture pet” cows) or out and about in this beautiful state I call home (Montana) with camera in hand.
